our mission
The Sparrow Schools Foundation is a charity registered in England which helps the Sparrow Schools in Johannesburg to provide education for disadvantaged children in South Africa.
All of the children at Sparrow are, academically, at least three years behind their chronological age, and 60% are affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Sparrow Schools offer an opportunity for these children to acquire skills that equip them for life.

An introduction to Sparrow Schools
A day in the life of a Sparrow pupil
"In the junior school I worked predominantly as an assistant teacher in the skills classes in which many of the children have special needs. I got to know the children well and got to understand their backgrounds. Each had a different story to tell and many had gone through hardships that I could barely comprehend. Nearly half lived in children's homes due to the fact that their parents had either died from one disease or another, or had too many problems of their own to be able to look after a child. But you would never have guessed that the children were having to cope with such problems. Although many of the children had to get up as early as 3.30 am to get to school I could see that they were happy to be there."
